Memorial Day is fast approaching. For most people, it’s a much-needed day off of work, one meant to honor those who’ve lost their lives serving our country.
Those on the Jersey Shore, however, also know it as the unofficial first day of summer, one spent grilling and drinking (responsibly!) on the beach — whenever the weather cooperates, that is.
Maybe I’m biased (spending 28 summers in one city will do that to you), but there’s really nothing like a South Jersey summer. Our winters can be brutal, so once the warm weather finally rolls around you can always catch us finding things to do outside in Atlantic City — especially during Happy Hour.
If you’re headed to Atlantic City at any time this summer, why? (Just kidding. Kind of.) Anyway, if you find yourself in AC any time between Memorial and Labor Days you owe it to yourself to check out some of the best outdoor bars in the area, according to the locals themselves.
Quite honestly, you really can’t go wrong anywhere you have a drink in your hand on a gorgeous day, and there are quite a few outside bars in Atlantic City to choose from. But if you’re looking for the best booze for your buck, here’s where to find it.
1. Vagabond
You may have heard of Vagabond Kitchen & Tap House thanks to its appearance on Season 24 of Diners, Drive-Ins and Dives. Though Vagabond’s outside patio is a small one, it’s situated along the bay and provides a great view of the sunset to go along with your Guy Fieri-approved meal.
2. Wonder Bar
Whether you choose to visit by land or sea, Wonder Bar’s outside tiki bar is a great spot to hang out after a long beach day. There are docks available for those who have a jet ski or boat. Plus, their food is great — I highly suggest the nachos or chicken salad.
3. Irish Pub
Not only does the Irish Pub have a great outside patio, but it also has a lot of history. It’s the oldest bar in Atlantic City, a former speakeasy, a spot on the Monopoly game board, and it’s open 24/7 — what more could you want? Just be aware that it is a cash only establishment.
4. Sirens Bar and Grill
Relatively new to the city and located in Kammerman’s Marina, Sirens is another spot you can reach by land or from the back bay. If you love yourself, try one of their fishbowls.
5. Back Bay Ale House
Locals flock to Back Bay, located along the water in the historic Gardner’s Basin area of Atlantic City, on the first sunny day over 60 degrees for the bar’s infamous Mason jar drinks. They open early at 11AM, so you can make a stop here after getting breakfast at the adjacent Gilchrist Restaurant.
6. The Biergarten
If you’re more into the beach view instead of the bay, head over to Atlantic City’s first beer garden which is right on the boardwalk next to Tropicana. If their huge beer selection and the beach views aren’t enough, there are also yard games to keep you busy.
7. Tennessee Avenue Beer Hall
I’ve already boasted about how Tennessee Ave Beer Hall has one of the best beer selections in the city. Part of Atlantic City’s “Orange Loop” revamp, the beer hall’s garden patio and back bar are now open.
